ARNOLD SKOLNICK: LOVE SONGSA PHOTOGRAPHIC VALENTINE TO THE ARTISTIC AND EROTIC
January 26, 2010Bring your Valentine to Elizabeth Moss Galleries to contemplate the shape of desire and the art of love through the erotic photography of Arnold Skolnick. Best known for creating the original Woodstock poster, Skolnick is also the publisher of Chameleon Books and has taught photography and graphic design at the International Center for Photography, Columbia School of the Arts, and New York University.
These luminousand lusciousblack and white images are both technically masterful, tasteful and mature. Commissioned for a book on sexual love in the 1970s, Skolnicks photographs pushed the boundaries of a more modest era, challenging conventions and sparking debate. Many were rejected by the publisher but embraced by the art world, where one critic wrote that these photos give the forms of two people making love the grandeur and power of sculpture. One is, of course, reminded of Rodin. Mindful of the controversy, Skolnick packed away his contact sheets for thirty years. Now in his 70s, he has returned to these images with an even more seasoned eye, making these lush prints available in book form and at Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Falmouth from February 11 to March 14, 2010.
Make a date with someone special for an opening reception complete with chocolate and champagne on Saturday, February 13 from 4pm to 6pm.
